 EU Students

The EU Socrates programme has now finished the second phase (2000 - 2006) and has been replaced by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme (2007 – 2013).

The Lifelong Learning Programme consists of four main actions:

  1. Comenius
  2. Erasmus
  3. Leonardo
  4. Grundtvig
    and
  5. In addition, the programme also includes Transversal actions (covering Arion study visits and activities that focus on language learning and innovation in ICT, previously covered by Lingua and Minerva).

You can find more information about the Lifelong Learning Programme at:
http://www.lifelonglearningprogramme.org.uk/

The British Council manage both Comenius (from 1 January 2007) and Erasmus (from April 1 2007) programmes.

Comenius & Erasmus

The introduction of the Lifelong Learning Programme will bring some changes to the Comenius programme. You can read more about these changes on the following website:

http://www.britishcouncil.org/comenius

Comenius enables schools and colleges to introduce or strengthen the European dimension in their curriculum.

The programmes are classified under three broad types of activity:

  •         Comenius School Partnerships enable pupils, students and staff from across Europe to work together on joint projects.

  •         Comenius Professional Development provides European in-service training for staff involved in school education and opportunities for trainee teachers. It also provides the opportunity to develop teaching resources.

  •         Comenius Assistants are intending and trainee teachers from Europe who are placed in schools and colleges across the UK. They can help to enhance the European and cultural dimension across the curriculum, as well as offer classes in their native language. Placements may be from three to ten months.

For more information on these programmes and to download application forms, please refer to the Comenius website:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/comenius

You can find more information about the Erasmus programme at:

The Leonardo, Grundtvig and Transversal actions are now managed by ECOTEC. You will therefore need to contact ECOTEC directly for further information on these programmes. You can find contact details at:

International students

You can find a guide to Sources of Funding for International Students at:

http://www.britishcouncil.org/learning-funding-your-studies.htm

This leaflet is produced by the British Council, the Council for International Education (UKCOSA) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Please note:

  • Not all the awards listed will be available to every student.

  • There is no funding available from the British Council in the UK for international students.

  • It is very rare that funding is awarded for undergraduate study in the UK.

To apply for British Council funding the student should apply to the office in the home country as a resident of that country.  The address of the British Council offices can be found at:  http://www.britishcouncil.org/home-contact-worldwide.htm

If the British Council does not have an office in the relevant home country, the student is not eligible for British Council funding. They should then contact the British Embassy or High Commission in the relevant country as they may be able to help further. You can find contact details at:  http://www.britishembassy.gov.uk
