Cambridge ILEC was created to meet the needs of both employers and lawyers. It is also suitable for law students intending to follow courses which include a significant English language content — either in their own country or abroad.

The Cambridge ILEC examination 

The aims of ILEC

  • to assess candidates’ ability to operate in English in an international legal environment

  • to allow candidates to demonstrate to employers their ability to communicate in English with clients and colleagues

  • to allow candidates to demonstrate to educational and training institutions their ability to follow a course of legal study where a significant portion of the instruction is in English

  • to have a positive and beneficial impact on the content and delivery of English language training courses for legal purposes

  • to provide an examination to do this which is fair to all candidates and which is delivered to international standards

  • to allow test users to compare candidates’ results with other qualifications which are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The examination consists of four separate papers testing reading, writing, listening and speaking. The examination texts and topics are set in the context of international commercial law. The following list is an illustration of some of the areas of law featured in ILEC:  Corporate, Business associations, Contract, Sale of goods, Real property, Debtor-creditor, Intellectual property, Employment, Competition, Environmental, Negotiable instruments, Secured transactions, Aspects of international law. The ILEC examination will also cover relevant aspects of legal practice.

ILEC assesses English language ability used in a legal context at Council of Europe Vantage’ Level (B2) and Council of Europe 'Effective Operational Proficiency’ Level (C1) for general language proficiency.

ILEC is recognised by leading associations of lawyers including:

  • the European Company Lawyers Association

  • the European Law Students Association

  • the International Association of Young Lawyers

  • the European Young Bar Association.

Cambridge ICFE is a high-level language qualification for accountants and finance professionals.

Studying for Cambridge ICFE will help finance and accounting professionals to improve their English language skills and use them in a wide range of accounting and financial contexts. Because the exam is based on realistic texts, topics and tasks that are found in the daily working life of those employed in an accounting and finance role, successful candidates will find that they are better able to function in practical situations, such as meetings and discussions of a financial nature where they have to express opinions clearly. They will also be able to better understand texts of various types, including financial statements, journal articles, letters, reports and proposals.

This is a short, part-time course (4 hours per week), focussing on examination skills and preparation for the ICFE examination.

ICFE assesses language skills in the context of finance and accounting. The examination is set at levels B2 (upper-intermediate) and C1 (advanced) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Modern Languages (CEF). Success at C1 level may be used as proof of the level of language necessary to work at a managerial or professional level or to follow a course of academic study at university level. This covers the levels of the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) and the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), and corresponds to bands 5.5-7.0 of IELTS.

The examination consists of four papers: Reading (75 mins), Writing (75 mins), Listening (approximately 40 mins) and Speaking (approximately 16 mins).
